Tryanmax:

When folks ask me what my religion is I have taken to saying I'm a follower of Christ as often as saying I'm a Christian.

But yeah, then you get the "protestant or Catholic (or Eastern Orthodox)?" question and what denomination or sect.
That's messed up and shouldn't be a problem, although I will say that any authenticly Christian church has much to offer whether they are Protestant or Catholic.

Some folks get caught up in the letter instead of the Spirit, I think, which has resulted in a lot of confusion and infighting, which is a colossal waste of time and can hurt how non-Christians perceive anyone who call themself a Christian.

Ben, People do flock to the real thing. I've seen that time and again. When you meet someone who not only believes, but tries to live their lives the right way, they are infectious.

On the crusades, I think it is a dirty word honestly for three reasons. First, I don't think Jesus would have approved an armed conflict. Secondly, at that point, "Christianity" was very corrupt -- multiple Popes, kings using it to control the population, etc. So they weren't really fighting for Christ's teachings so much as geopolitical power. Third, there were a lot of abuses at almost every level.

Again, I can't blame Christ or Christianity in the abstract for that, but I think it was a very unChristian thing to do.

Andrew:

I also like your Raiders analogy.

They may have some bad apples but taken in the proper perspective I sure that most Raider fans are decent folks.

Not as decent as Seahawk fans but decent nonetheless, LOL.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

I concur that Christ wouldn't approve of the corruption or abuses.

However, I don't believe Christ or God disapproves of personal self defense (or defense of others) or a self defensive war.

Ben, I just avoid answering. I've found it's too hard to get people to understand and it just leads to unpleasantness. So I skip it.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

Andrew: That's a good option too, LOL.
Personally, I suppose it depends on the situation and who is asking as well.

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, I suppose most Raiders fans are decent people, but you couldn't prove it be me! LOL!

I've heard Seahawks fans are quite courteous. My favorite team (Tampa) actually came into the league with the Seahawks. So they're like twins. :)

I don't think God disapproves of self-defense either, I'm just not sure the Crusades were about that so much as fighting over territory.

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, It depends on who I'm talking to and if I think they are capable of listening or if they'll just go with the "oh, you're not one of us, you're going to Hell" types.

Yes, I can respect where you're coming from, Andrew. I was speaking about it from a different perspective taking into account the context of the times they lived in.

A growing number of people now think we were too brutal during WW2. Certainly, a general or ZAdmiral from those days would scoff at how much we go out of our way (and spend) to avoid any civilian casualties today.

Not that the greatest generation condoned it but I think the vast majority of them realize the necessity of what they had to do.

The Civil War was far worse, and there was a lot of corruption and what we would consider war crimes going on during that war, on both sides.

But those are not an on par comparison to what went on in the crusades, just food for thought.
Towards the end, especially the crusades went too far, and even many of the people at the time grew weary of the extent, brutality and duration of it.
That was a very long war.

It would be interesting to see what would've happened if the crusaders had stopped after recovering just the land they lost and defeating the invaders.

There's so many perspectives and contexts to the crusades to consider, moreso because of how long it went on.

In any event, the aggressors of that war were far worse, IMO. Sadly, a lot of innocent people suffered and died as a result, particularly when it was used as an excuse for certain factions to gain property and power.

Ben, That's very true. We need to be careful not to judge people using modern standards. In fact, that's an annoying liberal trick, to judge people based on knowledge and beliefs that simply didn't exist at the time. Then they do the "I would have freed all the slave" or "I would have opposed Hitler if I were German" which we know just isn't true. It just makes them feel morally superior to pretend that they would have been more advanced than everyone else.

IRT the Raiders, the Seahawks used to be in the same division so there was always a rivalry going on.
More than with the Broncos, KC and the Chargers.

Funny you mentioned the Buccaneers. They had almost the same luck as the Seahawks with the exception Tampa Bay actually won a superbowl. Bastards. LOL.

Both teams have gotten alot better than they were the first twenty years or so. :^)

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, Being a Bucs fan, you take a lot of abuse. The team has almost never been competitive. The ownership was always indifferent (though the new owners are better). Everyone mocked their uniforms, their stadium, and their effort. The NFL never showed their games (I went 12 years without seeing a game on television!!).

These days they have more respectability, but they are still considered a farm team compared to the big boys in the league.

My favorite Seahawks moment, by the way, was Brian Bozworth threatening to hurt John Elway and then selling t-shirts in Denver with his face on them and the words "No Bozos". He made a fortunate with that. LOL!

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

Ugh, Bosworth. The worst Seahawk investment ever.

I have two greatest moments that atand out:

1. December 18, 1988. The Seattle Seahawks clinch their first division title in franchise history when they defeat the Los Angeles Raiders 43-37. David Krieg passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Brian Blades catches two touchdown passes. Steve Largent and John L Williams also each catch a touchdown pass.

2. Seahawks Beat Defending Champion Saints In Spectacular Fashion!

I don't think any Saints got much bounty money that day, LOL!
Lynch was incredible and Hasselbeck was in great form.

I'm still kind of ticked that the powers that be refused a 2 year and very reasonable contract for Matt, thus setting the stage for him to go to the Titans.

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, I think all the salary/contract stuff has gotten ridiculous as it's now virtually impossible for players to stick with a single team their entire careers. It's stupid that a half million dollars can be the difference between a great season and crappy season.

Yeah, Bosworth was a bust. That's too bad too because I was hoping to see some great things out of him.

Tampa is King of the Busts, by the way, when it comes to draft picks. I think they've missed horrifically on about 90% of their draft picks over the years. Every single can't miss prospect missed. The guys who eventually panned out where all second and third rounders or guys nobody else wanted.

In any event, the greatest Tampa moment was obviously the Super Bowl win. But I also remember a bit of the glory in the 1970s when the Bucs were actually a great team with Doug Williams as QB and Joe Gibbs (believe it or not) as offensive coordinator! They lost to the Rams in the Conference Championship, and the Rams went on to lose to the Steelers in the now famous Super Bowl.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

I will say this for Bosworth, he sure knew how to market himself...and he's a horrible actor, lol.

That's right! I had forgotten that about Tampa Bay. Doug Williams was a very underrated talent, but he and Joe Gibbs went on to greatness with the Redskins.

I'm not sure why the Bucs and Hawks have such bad luck with draft choices.
Of course, the draft is like playing blackjack and you never know who is gonna be a winning card.

Only a few of the first round guys go on to make an impact.
Often the later draft choices end up being the keepers. Jerry Rice is a good example of that.

I think it comes down to their work ethic. The vast majority of the best players train hard during the off season.

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, Absolutely. He was a marketing genius. I give him a lot of credit for that. It's just too bad he flamed out on the field. And yeah... horrible actor.

Williams was truly underrated. He was great and I am so happy I got to see him play in person. It annoys me that the owner back then (Culverhouse) was so cheap he wouldn't pay Williams to stay. He basically doomed the Bucs to decades of horrible failure.

I have no idea why some teams stink so badly at finding draft picks? I often wonder if it doesn't have more to do with the training they give after the draft than the draft pick themselves, but you never know.

One thing which makes me think that is that the Bucs had Steve Young for a year or two before he moved on the San Fran. He was HORRIBLE in Tampa and people figured his career was done. Then he went on to become great. I really think it was just that Tampa simply didn't know how to develop players. And I've seen similar things with other players the Bucs had -- horrible in Tampa, solid to great elsewhere.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

That's a good point, Andrew.

I noticed after we had Mike Holmgren the players all got better.
It remains to be seen what happens now but I do hope the current coach keeps his training regimen, because Holmgren is a genius.

AndrewPrice said...

Ben, I'm convinced coaching matters. I'm not sure how much it matters. Some guys just can't be trained. But I am convinced that coaching must play a part in the seemingly endless line of bad draft picks because I just can't understand how a team could miss so consistently?

Seriously, the Bucs miss on like 90% of their picks where teams like the Patriots miss on 30%. And it's been that way for decades, so there has to be more than just bad luck or bad scouting?

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

I concur. Much as I dislike Coach Belichek's ethics, he too is a genius of a coach.

The best coaches also know how to get the best out of their players.

Madden is a good example of that. On paper his Raiders should have never made it to the superbowl let alone win it.
But he inspired his players and they played like a team.

But take the current Cowboys. They have a lot of superstars on their team but they don't play like a team.

Coach Landry would've inspired them and took them much further than they have gotten.

AndrewPrice said...

Great examples and I totally agree. Madden got the most of people who didn't have much to offer. And the Cowboys are totally paper champions -- they look great on paper, but never have the discipline or drive to pull it together. Landry never would have allowed that.

I agree about Belichek too. I don't like him or his ethics, but he is undeniably a genius.

I'm hoping the new Buc's coach (Schiano) is like that. He did great things at Rutgers and he seems to really have everyone hopping down there. This is a real change for Tampa.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

I hope the Bucs do well too. Unless they play the Seahawks, lol.

AndrewPrice said...

LOL! It's going to be interesting to watch because the whole division is getting really, really strong -- Drew Brees and the Saints, Cam Newton and the Panthers, and Matt whatshisname with the Falcons. They're all top 10 quarterbacks by now, with good coaches and solid supporting talent. This could soon be the toughest division in football.

I'd like to see Peter Carrol do well. I've always liked him. He seems pretty decent.

USS Ben USN (Ret) said...

I like him too. He has a strong work ethic and I hope that infects the players. We still have a pretty solid team if they can avoid too many injuries.
