No Films Grrr

Sorry about the lack of a film review, folks. Believe it or not, I can't find anything worth reviewing at the moment. I tried several recent films this week and they all just left me feeling blah and like I had nothing to say. I may need to do something like "The Summer of 80's."

  1. I would love to see your take on either "The Devil's Advocate", or maybe revisit some of the films of your youth that you watched again as an adult after a break of many years. I still love both of the Bill & Ted movies, as stupid as they were. I didn't mean to bombard you with Keanu Reeves movies, but those 3 movies recently entered my mind in the last week...WEIRD

  2. Good idea, Pope! I really am of two minds on The Devil's Advocate. That would make a pretty good review, especially talking about their take on Satan!

Loved Bill and Ted, btw. Fun and clever films!

  3. How about that "Seth McFarlane Career Retrospective?" Also breathlessly awaiting your "Ted 2" review. ;-)

  4. Are you trying to get me to kill myself? LOL!

  5. Try "The History of Future Folk." it is the best movie ever written about space bluegrass. It really is good. Also it's free on Netflix.

  6. Just out of curiosity, what were the titles of the recent films that you tried watching this week, that left you feeling blah and that you had nothing to say, Andrew?

Were they all things currently on Netflix streaming and/or Amazon Prime, stuff on the cable movie channels (free preview weekends or regular subscription) or do you also still rent discs (Netflix/Redbox)?

  7. Backthrow, Here are the movies I watched recently that I thought might lead to a review. None did.

Jurassic World, The Intern, Mad Max Fury Road, Cinderella, It Follows, Tomorrowland, Trainwreck, Antman, Pan, Poltergeist

They were all dull, derivative and generic. Most I think are on Redbox. I saw a couple on HBO.

  8. Russ, I just looked that up. It sounds hilarious! I'll check that out asap.

  9. It's just a thought but we left a lot of work undone with last year's Summer of Seventies. The films of the seventies lend themselves to a lot of discussion. This is your show, but for my two cents worth I relly enjoyed that series.

  10. Let's see...

Mad Max: Fury Road - I liked it... it's beautiful to look at and I admire the sheer insanity of it all... but it had no lasting impact for me and it's basically Burning Man: The Movie!

Trainwreck - probably Apatow's best movie, and I know that isn't saying much at all (it helps he didn't write this one)... unfortunately, he still hasn't totally reigned in his worst impulses and there are improv scenes that go on waaay too long... having said that, the funniest parts involved LeBron James and John Cena.

Pan - I actually liked the first 20 minutes and if the whole movie had been about orphans during wartime, I would've liked it... but in the end, it was just a big dumb mess... but I don't think it totally deserved to die at the box-office like it did... and Hugh Jackman is always entertaining to watch.

Tomorrowland - [sigh] It's not bad, but it's not paced very well, it spoils the surprise of Tomorrowland much too early, and the plot is a bit too convoluted... they could've done anything and they turned it into an After School Special... "Think positive!" is a nice message but it isn't enough to hang a movie on!

And I just watched Zoolander 2... I'm a huge fan of the first one but I'm forced to agree with the critic on this... I smiled and there are a few fun gags but it can't hold a candle to its predecessor (which wasn't exactly high art, either!).

I also just watched Sicario... I liked it, and it's beautifully shot by Roger Deakins... but it's good... at times, very good... but some critics were falling over themselves to praise this movie. I didn't get that vibe at all.

  11. Antman was the only one worth watching. Mad Max was boring and about an hour too long same with Jurrasic World, which couldn't decide if it was a drama, a comedy, or a spoof. They should have gone with C.

I watched Zeitgeist last week. Basically, a conspiracy theorists porn on everything from Christianity to 9/11 to The Fed. I think they were trying to tie them all together but I don't see it.

Have you seen The Big Short? There are a lot of errors in the movie but kind of interesting take on the 2008 crash.

  12. I loved Fury Road. Lots of meaty action sequences.

    Antman was thoroughly meh.

Jurassic World was a new high watermark for bloodless, bland CG idiocy.

  13. Oh, cool. Andrew let me know what you think about THOFF. It's a good smart film that is also family friendly. It's like a cult movie, but it has a very sweet sensibility to it. Good music if you like a little bluegrass played by naive aliens who want to release a deadly virus into our atmosphere in order to cause our extinction.

  14. Did the Marvel series end?

  15. Watched Jurassic World the other night, couldn't sleep and it had just started so I watched it! My take "Meh!" Some decent moments but overall, fake looking CGI, and, as Andrew pointed out years ago, the writers just quit writing and might as well write "Insert CGI spectacle" here for the last 20 minutes. Literally the human protagonists have almost nothing to do the last ten minutes as they stare blankly at a blue screen and try to imagine CGI dinosaurs fighting! I am sooooo over CGI.

  16. Russ, I'm really looking forward to it. I like original and interesting movies very much. They are too rare.

  17. Voz, I'm not sure if Kit is continuing that or not. I'll have to ask him. There are a couple I could definitely review.

  18. PikeBishop, I felt the same way. When the humans mattered, the film was decent. But there were whole chunks, especially near the end that were just pure CGI and those moments are super boring.

  19. Koshcat, I have not see The Big Short, but I've heard it's good. I will definitely catch it at some point.

  20. GypsyTyger, I enjoyed doing those a lot. I could definitely continue them!

  21. Anthony and Scott, I thought they were all kind of meh. Even more so though, I didn't see anything in them that I thought was worth discussing. A lot of times even meh movies have something that causes me to think, but these really didn't.

  22. I just watched a movie called Joy with my 11 year old. She has been raving about it for a few weeks (she saw it at a friend's house) and I finally humored her and watched it with her. Against my expectations (I am more of a low brow action movie guy) I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Joy is based on a true story and is the rags to riches story of female inventor whose very complicated family alternated between being helpful and being harmful.

Its not a perfect movie (its a little slow to start) but it is great, telling an interesting story with lots of twists (some predictable, some not) and several stellar performances and it gives kids a message they need to hear about not just inspiration, but preparation and perseverance.

  23. Andrew,

I don't care what you say about Jurassic World. That movie brought immense joy my inner 5-year old self.

Antman was fun. Just fun. And right now, America needs fun.

I might give the Marvel series a shot.

  24. Antman's part in Captain America Civil War was great...as was Spidey's appearance.
