Hi Everyone! The film site will be starting again in earnest next week. So tune in Tuesday! In the meantime, are there any movies you are interested in seeing this year?
I'm looking forward to Star Wars - I'm hardly the first to say it but the bar has been set so low, it can't help but be better by comparison. My only thought is, how is it gonna be different from every other blockbuster released in the last 5 years?
And I'm sure the next Avengers will be a lot of fun but I'm almost burned out by the superhero genre. And I say that as someone who's not a hardcore comic fan to begin with.
Some folks say, "Well, it's like when westerns were popular." Yeah, but you didn't need to watch certain westerns to understand events in other westerns, and they were focused on telling individual stories, not setting up things for 5 years later!
On the TV end, I'm very much looking forward to the return of Veep and Silicon Valley on HBO.
I’m actually eager to see where they go with the Avengers film series, perhaps to a “grand climax” of sorts that may close out the use of this current cast before they decide to recast. Inevitably, these actors will move on and a new Thor, a new Captain America, and a new Iron Man will be cast.
I’m not soured on superhero films yet. I’m more fatigued on dystopian flicks. I’d like to see the last Mockingjay film, see where the Divergent series goes, but I think this cycle has run its course.
I’m depressed to think Disney will be making a bajillion new Star Wars flicks and the franchise is now nothing more than an endless sequel-thon like everybody else.
Spectre, the upcoming Bond movie, is my main must-see this year. I've enjoyed all of the Craig Bond movies so far so I'm sure this one will be quite entertaining. I'm also curious as to how it'll place in Bond-arama if you get around to viewing it, Andrew!
Jason, I've heard that Captain America has retired and others are considering the same. That said, I'm sure they have various reboots already planned. They could do like X-Men and go backwards in time, or Star Trek and erase the timeline, or just start over.
I'm sick of dystopian films too. It's all too gratuitous today.
Daniel, I forgot about Spectre. I am looking forward to that. I thought Craig's first two were brilliant, and I thought the first half off Skyfall was even better... it just fell apart once they captured Bardem.
Andrew, it should definitely be a good movie. I need to catch up on a lot of the other Bond movies, but I did enjoy Craig's three, with Quantum of Solace being my favorite. I admit to reading its Bond-arama entry before seeing it, but I think it enhanced the experience, not to mention Camille was a great Bond girl. Casino Royale dragged a bit for me, though I still enjoyed it, and I also see what you mean about Skyfall now that I've seen it for myself. Hopefully Spectre will turn out well, and I'm definitely looking forward to the review and how it changes the Bond-arama rankings!
Daniel, I'm glad the Bond-arama series enhanced your experience! I too thought that Quantum was the best of the three, though that remains a minority opinion at the moment. To me though, that film really was a home run!
Skyfall was disappointing because it was such an amazing film until it got stupid. It had amazing potential.
Agreed about Casino Royale, it does drag. But it is largely excellent.
Foxcatcher, American Sniper, Inherent Vice, Wild for now. I enjoyed the Equalizer. Denzel is about the only guy who could fill Edward Woodward's shoes. New Bond is eagerly anticipated. Not much else on my radar right now. I tend to enjoy British television more than many of the films. Hopefully, nothing from Tom Hanks or Barbra Joan Streisand.
As far as movies go the only thing I'm looking forward to right now is American Sniper. As far as tv though... Throughout eternity there have been moments when two great champions collided. Lucifer and Michael. Moses and Ramses. David and Goliath. Washington and Cornwallis. Grant and Lee. Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The Man With No Name and Ramone Roho. Harry Lime and Kevin McCallister. Two men enter, one man leaves. On January 20th begins the 13 episode dance that will end in the final confrontation between Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder. I regret two things, One, that Justified has to end, and two, that Sergio Leone isn't alive to direct season six. NOBODY did confrontation like Leone. Can you imagine it? After all the side plots are settled, the two square off while Enio Morricone's score begins. An overhead shot of both men, then the 360 degree pan starts. Full body shots of each man, narrowing to face shots, then just shots of each man's eyes as the score builds, intercut with shots of their hands. I want it to cut out there, though. I don't want to watch one of them die. I think I'll be disappointed on that count, but it'll be great getting there. GypsyTyger
you would be guessing wrong, Bev. Downton is one of the best things going on big screen or small. Imitation Game is also high on my list even though I forgot to include it in my comment. Benedict Cumberbatch always seems to do quality work.
I'm pretty much a sucker for anything Mavel Studios puts out. However one feels about superhero films as a genre, Marvel does them well.

ReplyDeleteScott, I actually dread the new Star Wars. It reeks of a real nail in the coffin affair of the last vestiges of what made the original so incredible.
