Tuesday Top 5

More stuff ranked just because we can! Let's do another Top 5!

Question: What are your Top 5 Country Songs?

Scott: I'm not a country music guy at all so I apologize for the, uh, obvious nature of these answers. [smile]
1. "Crazy" - Patsy Cline (popular in my family!)
2. "Stand By Your Man" - Tammy Wynette
3. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - The Charlie Daniels Band
4. "Ghost Riders in the Sky" - various
5. "Ring of Fire" - Johnny Cash
Andrew: We got both kinds [of music]... we got country and western!". That said... arg... too too too much to choose from.
1. "The Master's Call" - Marty Robbins
2. "Smokey Mountain Rain" - Ronnie Milsap
3. "When You Leave That Way" - Confederate Railroad
4. "Guitars, Cadillacs & Hillbilly Music" - Dwight Yoakam
5. "Just Call Me Lonesome" - Radney Foster
Not much to add, is there?

28 comments:

  1. 1. "Engine, Engine #9" - Roger Miller
    2. "I Love A Rainy Night" - Eddie Rabbitt
    3. "Convoy" - C. W. McCall
    4. "Straight Tequila Night" - John Anderson
    5. "9 to 5" - Dolly Parton
    6. "She'll Come Back To Me" - Cake (a country song by a non-country band)
    7. "The Weight" - The Band (I think there's room for roots rock, don't you?)

Hon. Mention: this nonsense, and this, and I couldn't leave this out.

And for ScottDS, my favorite version of Ghost Riders.

  2. tryanmax, Nicely linked! LOL!

Let me tell you, I struggled to keep this at five. There were several people like Randy Travis and John Anderson and Willie Nelson that I really wanted to add, but couldn't.

  3. Seven is the new five. Or maybe it's the old one. They used to be big on top sevens in the ancient world. I'm bringin' it back.

  4. I can't do five, so you get ten:

    1. "El Paso" - Marty Robbins
    2. "Ring of Fire" - Johnny Cash
    3. "Imagine That" - Patsy Cline
    4. "A Million Years or So" - Roger Miller
    5. "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" - Dwight Yoakam
    6. "The Ballad of Thunder Road" - Robert Mitchum
    7. "Johnny One Time" - Brenda Lee
    8. "Sixteen Tons" - Tennessee Ernie Ford
    9. "Big John" - Jimmy Dean
    10. "Wolverton Mountain" - Claude King

  5. What in the world, people? No George Jones? No Hank Williams?

    1. He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
    2. Lost Highway - Hank Williams
    3. Folson Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
    4. You Never Even Called Me by My Name - David Allen Coe
    5. There Ain't No Good Chain Gang - Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings

Wow, it really is hard to keep it down to 5. I also like a lot of those above such as Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, John Anderson, Dolly Parton, etc, though I'd pick different songs for some of them.

  6. 1. Ghost Riders in the Sky (Johnny Cash)
    2. It's Five o'Clock Somewhere (Alan Jackson feat. Jimmy Buffet)
    3. Ghost in this House (Alison Krause + Union Station)
    4. Come on Over Tonight (Brad Paisley)
    5. My Maria (Brooks and Dunn)

(No one else likes more contemporary country?)

  7. 5!?!?!?

    George Strait
Chris Ledeoux (esp. This Cowboy's Hat)
    Garth Brooks' first 3 albums
    Reba
    Patsy Cline

    Also, but not by them:
"The Red and Rio Grande" Doug Supernaw
"Should've Been a Cowboy" & "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" Toby Keith

  8. Backthrow, Great list! I'm a big fan of Marty Robbins and "El Paso" is one of my favorites.

  9. Retro Hound, Doing just five was really hard in this instance. I like almost everything everyone has listed above and even more. George Jones in great!

  10. goldvermilion87, Excellent list! I definitely like contemporary country. I'm a big fan of Brooks and Dunn too. My favorite of theirs is "Lost and Found In a Border Town". And Alison Krause has an amazing voice!

  11. rlaWTX, Tony Keith and Doug Supernaw are great. I originally had "Reno" listed, but then swapped it out at the last minute. And Keith's "Should've Been A Cowboy" is fantastic!

  12. Chris Ledeux was pretty great too - underrated commercially, I think...

It's really too bad that Doug Supernaw imploded. He was great in concert - esp. smaller venues. They'd play all of their stuff, then start covering country and rock that they liked. Lots of fun!

I had trouble with the 5 songs limit, so I went with artists. :)

  13. Wreck of the Old 97 -- Cash's version

The Streets of Laredo -- Marty Robbins

Malaguena -- instrumental by Roy Clark

St. John the Gambler by Townes Van Zandt

Pancho and Lefty -- also by Van Zandt

  14. rlaWTX, I like Chris Ledeux, but you're right that he hasn't hit it very big. Great voice though.

    Yeah, too bad about Supernaw.

  15. Floyd, Good list! I like Van Zandt a lot.

  16. And I have to post this... Roy Clark appeared on, of all shows The Odd Couple -- a blatant at advertising his guitar... and he plays a smokin' -- and I mean SMOKIN', version of Malaguena...

  17. attempt to advertise his show I should say... anyway... do yourself a favor and go see it -- it might be the best 3 minutes you've spend in awhile.

  18. These are all great and there are just too many to choose from. Love to see all the Dwight Yoakam fans. The only person I didn't see is George Strait.

I really can't get into the newer country. Something about it rubs me the wrong way.

  19. Malaguena. Wow, that takes me back. Our marching band played that when I was a high school sophomore.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Floyd, I remember him mainly from "Hee Haw" and he always had excellent skills whenever he was called upon to play there.

  21. Koshcat, Country kind of comes and goes for me. I don't like it when it gets too close to rock or when it gets too "self-righteous hillybilly."

    ReplyDelete
  22. I could listen to Alison Kraus's voice all day!

    Also "self-rightous hillbilly"! Haha!

I assume you are referring to the obligatory "I sing Country. You may not like Country but that's because your brain was fried by the city slicker rap type stuff. Real people listen to Country! Seriously. It's awesome and everybody knows it!" songs? Because those drive me NUTS! Yes, country sells more albums in America than any other genre because it speaks to the experience a larger group of people than Hip Hop does. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT.

    25. "Even if it Breaks Your Heart" - Eli Young Band

    ReplyDelete
  24. goldvermilion, That's exactly what I'm talking about. There are a lot of songs that basically come across as "If you ain't a truck driver or a coal miner then you ain't a reel 'merkican!"

    ReplyDelete
  25. tryanmax, I don't know any of those! :P

Actually, there's a lot of good stuff on that list.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Kenny Rogers!! How could I forget him!! When I was a kid we had a "greatest hits" 8-track of his that we listened to all the time on the way into town!!! "Coward of the County" still makes me sniffly. and "The Gambler"! and "Ruby"...

"Black Velvet" is designed to create a certain mood - and does it well!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can't believe I thought of all those songs and "Neon Moon" by Brooks & Dunn never occurred to me!
