Questionable Star Wars vol. 8

Rumors of the prequels being an ironic joke are greatly exaggerated, but that doesn’t mean the Star Wars saga didn’t have its funny moments.

Question: "What was the funniest moment in the series?"

Andrew's Answer: Han Solo definitely had the best lines, though interestingly, he’s not really comic relief. In fact, I can't think of anyone else who said anything funny. One of Han's best comments was: “Who's scruffy lookin’?” I love this line because he's clearly focusing on the least offensive thing Leia said and he really seems offended by it... this was just one of those hilarious moments.

Scott's Answer: It's interesting... there are funny lines we all love to quote but no inherently funny scenes or situations, except one: Han Solo's "...we're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?" scene from the first film. I'm pretty sure it was mainly improvised by Harrison Ford on the set and it's hilarious.

  2. Han Solo: Afraid I was gonna leave without giving you a goodbye kiss?
Princess Leia: I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee.
Han Solo: I can arrange that. You could use a good kiss.

"Would somebody get this walking carpet out of my way."

"Wookees are known to pull peoples arm's out of their sockets if they loose"
"Try a new strategy R2, let the wookee win"

    From the Empire radio series-
"Why is your hand over the droids vocal slot?"
    "He's gotta cough."

  3. “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere”

Basically most of Anakin's dialog makes up the funniest moments in Star Wars.

If you mean intentionally funny then it has to be Han Solo's insolent grin and his great one lines like the ones mentioned and “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side" and "Never tell me the odds!".

    Scott.

  4. I always liked it when Leia kisses Luke in the med-bay on Hoth, then storms out and Luke puts his hands behind his head and gives Han that "Oh yeah, she digs me." look.

  5. Andrew -

Great choice! I've been called "scruffy-looking" whenever I skipped shaving for a few extra days and I always answer with Han's line. :-)

Pink 5 has been on my radar but I never got around to seeing it. (I know, it's short!)

The talent of Star Wars (and Star Trek) fans never ceases to amaze me.

Classic lines, especially the kiss line from Empire, which only proves that good humor can only help an otherwise dark story. Hitchcock was the master of that.

Ugh! I distinctly remember seeing Clones at a midnight screening and there were snickers, not during that scene but the fireplace scene where Anakin professes his love to Padme... or something.

In retrospect, I suppose that scene can have a couple different meanings. :-)

The "Noooooo!!" never really bothered me at the time and it was only years later when I realized what a cosmic joke it had become.

  11. K, Interesting. I'll have to check that out later. "Many other untrained pilots risked their lives." LOL!

  13. Scott, Very nice! Yeah, almost everything he lover-boy Skywalker says is a joke.

  16. Thanks Scott, I think that's the perfect moment to you show you Han's character. It's just so beautifully written on so many levels.

  17. I have to admit that I like C3PO's stuffy "unintended" comments... he's just so - serious, about everything. He makes me smile!

I might be the only person who enjoys C3PO's bad puns in Clones: "This is such a drag!" as he's getting dragged, and so on and so forth.

Like I said, only person. -)

  19. Empire, for being the "darkest" of the original trilogy, also had the most humor. Naturally, the best lines belong to the best character in the movie, Han Solo. "I can arrange that!", "Never tell me the odds!", "Laugh it up, fuzzball!", "There's no time to discuss this in committee!" Like any good Star Wars geek, I could go on. I could even point out that the last example paid off in one of the very few decent lines of dialogue in "The Phantom Menace." But I won't, because I'm all about the Machete Order which excises Episode One from the canon.

  20. rlaWTX, I like C3PO's pessimism. It's funny coming from a robot. :)

  21. Dave, Agreed. Empire is the darkest and yet it does have all the best humor. I wonder if there's a connection?

I'm fine with pretending Ep. 1 never happened.

It's a testament to a filmmaker like Irvin Kershner who, like Hitchcock, recognized the need for humor in even the darkest stories. It also helped he had good actors who were no doubt tired of Lucas' sparse "Faster, more intense!" direction. :-)

Somebody get this walking carpet out of my way.

Have you ever seen Red Letter media's take down where they play the romantic scenes with a 70s style sitcom laugh track as background? My God, it works!
