Question: "What was the funniest moment in the series?"
Andrew's Answer: Han Solo definitely had the best lines, though interestingly, he’s not really comic relief. In fact, I can't think of anyone else who said anything funny. One of Han's best comments was: “Who's scruffy lookin’?” I love this line because he's clearly focusing on the least offensive thing Leia said and he really seems offended by it... this was just one of those hilarious moments.
Scott's Answer: It's interesting... there are funny lines we all love to quote but no inherently funny scenes or situations, except one: Han Solo's "...we're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?" scene from the first film. I'm pretty sure it was mainly improvised by Harrison Ford on the set and it's hilarious.

ReplyDeleteBasically most of Anakin's dialog makes up the funniest moments in Star Wars.
If you mean intentionally funny then it has to be Han Solo's insolent grin and his great one lines like the ones mentioned and “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side" and "Never tell me the odds!".

I always liked it when Leia kisses Luke in the med-bay on Hoth, then storms out and Luke puts his hands behind his head and gives Han that "Oh yeah, she digs me." look.

ReplyDeleteClassic lines, especially the kiss line from Empire, which only proves that good humor can only help an otherwise dark story. Hitchcock was the master of that.

ReplyDeleteUgh! I distinctly remember seeing Clones at a midnight screening and there were snickers, not during that scene but the fireplace scene where Anakin professes his love to Padme... or something.

Empire, for being the "darkest" of the original trilogy, also had the most humor. Naturally, the best lines belong to the best character in the movie, Han Solo. "I can arrange that!", "Never tell me the odds!", "Laugh it up, fuzzball!", "There's no time to discuss this in committee!" Like any good Star Wars geek, I could go on. I could even point out that the last example paid off in one of the very few decent lines of dialogue in "The Phantom Menace." But I won't, because I'm all about the Machete Order which excises Episode One from the canon.

ReplyDeleteIt's a testament to a filmmaker like Irvin Kershner who, like Hitchcock, recognized the need for humor in even the darkest stories. It also helped he had good actors who were no doubt tired of Lucas' sparse "Faster, more intense!" direction. :-)
